Lifesaving #5! With BONUS!

First off the day is 19th February 2009.

It is the FIRST DAY of my braces treatment! More info in my braces blog:
http://mybraceslog.blogspot.com/

Do check it out :)

Now..

Training #5 19 February, Thurs:

Today was much less tiring, thankfully.
We did a refresher on the tow victim to side and landing...man I need a lighter partner lol.
Also, we tried with assistance (by-stander)...still very heavy dudes around.

After that, we did something really cool. We did face-first surface dive followed by leg-first surface dive. 4m deep. Man my ears seriously hurt bad. Like they were going to explode...or implode. Anyway, there's a technique called equalizing where you blow with your nose and mouth closed (ie, through your ears, if that's even possible.)

Hmm...after that we did land based EAR, learning the recovery position. We also learned how to do dr.ABC and learn the finger sweeps/swipes to remove any objects present. Also when the victim 'vomits', how to react.

After that we did a simulation where the 2 instructors actually ate food like papaya, pear, banana, worse of all being OREO. Chew into a goo. Thankfully I wasn't the one practicing when food was used. Phew. It's super hilarious, like a drama class. The victim actually threw up all over his face and shirt and all. GROSS. Some internal dirty jokes about fingering I shall not reveal.

Great day! no crazy swimming. :)

Jonathan
Training #4 (make up): 18 Feb Wed

Hmm...Rather enjoyable! Not much physical training, more on skills and techniques. How to use rescue aids such as rigid stick, long-sleeved shirts, kickboards, life-bouy and most fun of them all...rope throw!

Sculling water with hands only...It's hard to describe, easy to say, very hard to do. Our standoff position is sculling with 2 hands, horizontal face up, one leg raised to surface level. Try it! Test yourself to see how long you can stay balanced.

After or before that (I really forgot the sequence), we learned how to do water entries etc..plundge, impact xxx(i forgot the name! oh no).

Very fun day I think...Have training later at 730...so ciaos first :)

Saving lives for you and me

Recently I decided to join the lifesaving course organised by NTU, it consists the Lifesaving 1/2/3, CPR and BM(Bronze Medallion). I kinda joined late, last monday 9th of Feb. I'll try to outline the training programme that I had...it's kinda shag, really.
Oh, the regular training schedule is Mon, Thurs 7.30pm to 10.30pm. I gotta make up for the lessons I missed.

9th Feb, Monday:

I started off with a categorization test...basically to see if you're fit enough for the course.
  • 50m breaststroke or freestyle swim under 1minute
  • 5 minutes of treading water followed by
  • 2 minutes of treading water without hands ( just legs)
After the treading my legs were screaming!! The tightness of wanting to cramp up and yet not cramping...and more of these to come. Zzz

Following that:
6 laps of Lifesaving Backstroke (ie: 1 hand)

4 laps of freestyle (kicking only) with kickboard+
4 laps of breaststroke (kicking only) with kickboard
(at this point my legs were so super tight...and only 5-10 seconds of rest after each lap~)

4 laps of lifesaving tow (backstroke)+
2 laps of lifesaving tow (backstroke)- supposedly side but I haven't learnt.

After that, we proceeded to the 4m diving pool to learn defensive blocking. This is to defend outself from an uncooperative victim and to keep a safety distance. Normally we will do a leg push , but that day we learnt how to do an "Arm Block" if the victim is too close for a Leg push/block. The details of how we did it...well it's too graphical to discribe in words to I'll leave it at that :). We basically did this all the way till the end.

And oh. We also learnt how to release grips if the victim managed to grab our wrists and stuff. Sorta like doing Aikido or Jujitsu, LOL!
Oh I did not mention, apparently we can't wear goggles for the test. So most of the the time we train without goggles...for the first time, I found out the degree of strain that puts on our eyes!!

And that concludes day 1...

Training #2 : 12 Feb Thurs

We spent all the time at the 4m diving pool. Did a little warm up laps, then we practiced abit of what we learnt last week. And...more Aikido/Jujitsu moves to unlock ourselves from victims that have grabbed us from the front, or the back, a bear hug.

Training was tough, because we mainly practiced in the water, having to tread water while waiting for instructions was sheer "shagness" or so I call it. We played "victim" and "rescuer". I think the funniest moments (come to think of it, quite scary) was that the instructor would pounce occasionally on unsuspecting "rescuers" and they would have to break free. Because of how sudden it was, and the size (he's kinda big..like twice, 3 times my size)...most of them couldn't get away on time and/or drink water. In fact, this course made me drink water alot..and I thought I was a decent swimmer. Zzz.

For the rest of the training, we learnt how to do EAR (Expired Air Resusitation), which is prior to CPR. The acronym is Dr.ABC which stands for
  • Danger (surroundings to victim and to self)
  • Response (of victim)
  • Airway
  • Breathing
  • Circulation
Details, not too interesting. You could ask me if you are though...got some handbook hehe.
That was all. The water treading being the most tiring exercise though.

Training #3 (today): 17 Feb Mon

Today was by far the most tiring training yet! The swimming training (ya..at least to me la..yaya..I weak ) was basically consisting:

Warm up (appetisers):
  • 2 laps freestyle
  • 2 laps breaststroke
  • 4 laps lifesaving backstroke ( ugh teach me sidestroke already will ya?!)
Main course:
  • 50 m freestyle kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m breastroke kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m freestyle or breaststroke Hand only (with leg float) x2 = 100m
  • 100 m swim any style.
  • Total: 300m or 6 laps (the hand only being the MOST Tiring!~~)
At this point I was like wha...shag! But upon completion, we were told that we're going to 4 sets of that. I was like...whaa..zz cannot la. Some girl called 'mariam' or something..haha her expression was damn funny. For effects sake:

#2
  • 50 m freestyle kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m breastroke kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m freestyle or breaststroke Hand only (with leg float) x2 = 100m
  • 100 m swim any style.
  • Total: 300m or 6 laps (the hand only being the MOST Tiring!~~)
#3
  • 50 m freestyle kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m breastroke kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m freestyle or breaststroke Hand only (with leg float) x2 = 100m
  • 100 m swim any style.
  • Total: 300m or 6 laps (the hand only being the MOST Tiring!~~)
#4
  • 50 m freestyle kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m breastroke kicking only (with kickboard)
  • 50 m freestyle or breaststroke Hand only (with leg float) x2 = 100m
  • 100 m swim any style.
  • Total: 300m or 6 laps (the hand only being the MOST Tiring!~~)
And hardly any rest between each laps and sets we did. That's a total of....24 laps of hell~
When I finished, my eyes were VERY blurry and I was seeing rings at each light source I thought I ws going to faint or lose my sight. scary. Not forgetting my legs were screaming "cramp!" and my chest about to burst inside out.

After that, we tried a 50m swim "to victim" followed by a "50m" tow using a long sleeve shirt. it's erm. relatively easy to swim 50m without any deadweight :| We took turns...and I really had difficulty when it was my turn to tow. I mean, it's hard enough to backstroke with one hand without load..with load..well basically I went under water most of the 50m back. Maybe also...my "victim was..just too heavy" lol. (dmg:100m or 2 laps)

After that was basically learning lifesaving techniques; How to turn an unconscious face-down person up , progressively standing to while treading and then actual towing.
Then, we learnt how to place a person to the side of the pool, and get up with ONE HAND. I couldn't really do it, except in a quite UNGLAM manner..zzz

After that was really tough for me. We took turns to pull each other out of the pool, like doing laundry we dip the person to gain momentum and then pull him/her up. Again, my partner was the 80kg-ish sort, while me a puny 60. He pulled me up quite effortlessly, whereas I could only pull him up to his stomach area before losing strenght. (Oh, we had to take extra 'precaution' not to rub the family jewel - for guys, against the pool side and stuff..could be quite painful.) and...we ended there.

All in all, I'm super tired now, my eyes blurry still. But I had fun. Hope to be fitter and..heavier. Can't let my partner have such an easy time during the test: lol. 3 other guys are also 80ish. I'm in the deep end of the pool zzz.

Oh, I'm trying to keep a count of the number of laps I swim each session to give me a grand total at the end...just for the sake of keeping track haha.

Training #1: ~21 ish
Training #2: ~none..the dive pool is quite a small square but treading water ish eq tiring.
Training #3: ~34 ish

I wish they were 'regular laps' wun be so tiring. LOL.
Okie..Jon out~

My rebuttal to my prof

Had some discussion regarding "why should young people show deference or respect to the elderly". Because the topic is breaking free of tradition, he insisted that we do not include tradition as a reason! I think most people answered and tend to stray to tradition...so here's my view, or attempt(which i replied to the prof via email)

Oh I have an opinion regarding the question of "Why must young people show deference to the elderly"

Some people have mentioned that the elderly have contributed more to the society than the young. Your rebuttal is that that may not be true, as there are young CEOs and managers which are supporting the economy through tax paying and employment opportunities.

I would like to build on that argument and add some points.

In the context of Singapore; It is a fairly young nation. 43 years ago there were much uncertainties. Economical, socio-political upheavals resulted in riots and strikes. With no natural resources and no backing, we have certainly came along way to achieve the peace and security, economic stability and prosperity that we have. These were built on the sweat and blood of the older generation; The people, and of good governance. It could have been all or nothing...we might not have the luxury to study peacefully, as we now take education for granted; nor could we work. You might not even be teaching in NTU, true? (else where perhaps...) We might not even have the freedom of going out on the streets!

So, the point about the young manager contributing more to society by paying more tax is moot, or would be moot, without the older generation, that is, the elderly now, having paved the way for the country's growth! While it may be as you said, that the future generations might not hold these concept of "honouring parents or elders", but i reckon that as we constantly instill in them the lessons that history teaches us, they will not be as deluded and apathetic by the notion (and of growing up) in peace. Therefore we "should" honour our elders, as do our "parents".

Would this approach be less of "tradition" as a reason for why "should" the young respect the elderly? The Americans honoured Abraham Lincoln for his sacrifice to the country historically and even now. They do not do it "because my dad did it" or "my parents did so", but rather they understood the significance of the role he played which was a pivotal turning point in history which led them to where they are now.(Granted, they are educated as such, which I believe so.) By the same token I believe us as a younger generation and generations to come will comprehend if educated, the importance of our forefathers and elders/elderly, and will respect them so not because of tradition. Or not just because of tradition.

This is one reason why we "should" respect the elderly that I think does not use tradition as a reason to do so, although tradition does play a part. I'm horrible at chinese but "Ying shui shi yan/yuan" or "know the source of the water" might aptly encompass this point of the argument.

Erm..so..comments please? This prof apparently dislikes the use of religion or "religious arguments", "traditions" to back these questions. He prefers "rational thought" or "thinking" or "modern thinking". I seriously question the rationality of "rational thought"! paradoxical.

Dusting Off

A little dusting off cobwebs in this blog. First off, congratulations to the couple in class...God bless!

Well, I came to the realisation that blogging wasn't an outlet for emotions, anymore - hence the frequency of updating. In all my life, the greatest moments are memories that cannot simply be...written down in words. Life altering events, outings; just the bonding of friendship, is shared between friends, between loved ones. These sweet moments live on within us.
(Just so you know I'm alive and kicking.)

And wow! I'm gonna survive one week without dear soon. It is probably the longest week of my life. Serious. Sunday began fine, being refreshed by church and God. But as monday came and the week bore on...loneliness it seems...was ever encroaching. Well I'm glad to have talked to you today, before my mind goes too wild. HAHA.

A little update which I ought to have done weeks ago. I passed my driving! On the 10th Jun. Yeah. I mean, after 2 tries, I finally passed. God's grace of course...long story short...the thought of the prospects of failing was very real...gives me the shivers even now. And the photo-license finally came!
Too bad I have to collect it tomorrow. Stupid postman chose to deliver at odd timings earlier this afternoon.

On a lighter note, special sem has begun last week, and today being the fourth session we already had a 10% weightage quiz. Which was definitely easy, but i learnt my lesson never to underestimate any module, because everyone else do equally fine you become...average. Duh
Well, like mentioned...life's priorities changes, so somehow, excelling in this aspect just don't quite..appeal to me any longer.

Anyway, enough dusting off...I wonder when I will blog next...or what I should blog it on. Maybe, most likely, I'm just plain lazy. Haha!

(Well isn't better if people who read this blog, if any, just communicate with me? If communication were to by any means strengthen a relationship that is.)

The Greatest Gift of God

is love undoubtedly. Love amongst strangers, love amongst countrymen. Love between friends and love between family members. Love, between my other half, who taught me the greatest of all ; God's love for us.

I remember about this female evangelist that my pastor talked about. During world war 2, her husband had been mercilessly executed by a German commander despite her pleas. Not long after the war ended, she did about her evangelistic works proclaiming the forgiveness of sin, of love, and was pretty famous (sad, i can't remember any names.).

So during one evangelistic event, she was preaching and finally made an altar call (one which calls people to the front to accept Christ), she was full of joy, seeing the many who stepped forth. Then suddenly a familiar face that she could never forget. The rage inside of her boiled. Yes. She saw the ragged face of the German commander who cold blooded-ly murdered her husband. Here she was preaching about forgiveness and love, and yet her heart burned with hatred for the man. She cannot forgive, she cannot do it.

In desperation she cried to God for help, to help her love the man, that which she thought impossible to do. There as she determined to step forward, a supernatural love from God came upon her filled her up and with tears she reached forward and shook and hugged the man.

Wonderful, isn't it?

This post was solely for your reading really. But it doesn't matter.

Truly I have been blessed with many things. But to me, the greatest of which is you my dear. You! You have changed my perspective on many things. You taught me how to love. How we ought to live Godly lives. How God placed you in my life so miraculously, so timely. You taught me the importance of fellowship, with men and with God.

Surely if God wants to shape my future, you probably have the biggest hand in it. Not to say everything revolves around you, but I think my future is directed around and for both you, and God. The passion I was had, the things which were not of real value and importance, they slowly lose their strongholds in my life. Instead you, family, friends and God start to fill up those gaps. Our plans for the future, I earnestly look forward to them!

Well, somehow I woke up with fears. Fears that I would lose you. That brought me to realise how important you are to me. That everything would crumple and time would surely stop for me. I know it's silly, knowing that above all else, we have God. But on this earth, I would like to have you for the rest of my 60 70 years or so..despite our inherent flaws..love transcends all. I would like to have the fellowship of my family and my friends. Love sums it all up. Indeed the greatest of all commandments is Love thy God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might...and Love thy neighbours as thyself. Ahaha..silly me..

ahahah....hee.

Watch The Lamb

Walking on the road to Jerusalem, the time had come to sacrifice again,
My two small sons, they walk beside me on the road,
The reason that they came was to watch the lamb.

Daddy, Daddy, what will see there?
There’s so much that we don’t understand,
So I told them of Moses and father Abraham,
Then I said dear children watch the lamb.
There will be so many in Jerusalem today,
We must be sure the lamb doesn’t run away.
And I told them of Moses and father Abraham,
Then I said “dear children watch the lamb”.

When we reached the city, I knew something must be wrong,
There were no joyful worshipers, no joyful worship songs.
I stood there with my children in the midst of angry men.
Then I heard the crowd cry out “crucify Him”.
We tried to leave the city, but we could not get away.

Forced to play in this drama, a part I did not wish to play.
Why upon this day, were men condemned to die?
Why were we standing here, where soon they would pass by?
I looked and said, even now they come.
The first one cried for mercy, the people gave him none.
The second one was violent, he was arrogant and loud.
I still hear his angry voice, screaming at the crowd.

Then someone said there’s Jesus, I scarce believed my eyes.
A man so badly beaten, He barely looked alive.
Blood poured from His body, from the forms upon His brow,
Running down the cross, falling to the ground.
I watched Him as He struggled, I watched Him as He fell,
The cross came down upon His back, the crowd began to yell,
In that moment I felt such agony, in that moment I felt such loss,

Till a Roman soldier grabbed my arm and screamed, you, carry His cross.
At first I tried to resist him, then his hand reached for his cross,
So I knelt and took the cross from the Lord,
I placed it on my shoulder and started down the street,
The blood that he’d been shedding was running down my cheek.
They led us to Golgotha, they drove nails deep in His feet and hands,
Yet upon the cross I heard Him pray, “Father, forgive them”.

Oh, never have I seen such love in any other eyes,
Into thy hands I commit my spirit, He prayed and the He died,
I stood for what seemed like years, I’d lost all sense of time
Until I felt two tiny hands holding tight to mine,
The children stood there weeping, and I heard the oldest say,
“Father please forgive us, the lamb ran away”.

Daddy, Daddy, what have we seen here?
There’s so much that we don’t understand.
So I took them in my arms, and we turned and faced the cross,
Then I said “dear children, watch the lamb”.

Wing a Wong Wang (Wand) Harry?

You just gotta bite this.

JonJonB> Purely in the interests of science, I have replaced the word "wand" with "wang" in the first Harry Potter Book
JonJonB> Let's see the results...

JonJonB> "Why aren't you supposed to do magic?" asked Harry.
JonJonB> "Oh, well -- I was at Hogwarts meself but I -- er -- got expelled, ter tell yeh the truth. In me third year. They snapped me wang in half an' everything

JonJonB> A magic wang... this was what Harry had been really looking forward to.

JonJonB> "Yes, yes. I thought I'd be seeing you soon. Harry Potter." It wasn't a question. "You have your mother's eyes. It seems only yesterday she was in here herself, buying her first wang. Ten and a quarter inches long, swishy, made of willow. Nice wang for charm work."
JonJonB> "Your father, on the other hand, favored a mahogany wang. Eleven inches. "

JonJonB> Harry took the wang. He felt a sudden warmth in his fingers. He raised the wang above his head, brought it swishing down through the dusty air and a stream of red and gold sparks shot from the end like a firework, throwing dancing spots of light on to the walls

JonJonB> "Oh, move over," Hermione snarled. She grabbed Harry's wang, tapped the lock, and whispered, 'Alohomora!"

JonJonB> The troll couldn't feel Harry hanging there, but even a troll will notice if you stick a long bit of wood up its nose, and Harry's wang had still been in his hand when he'd jumped - it had gone straight up one of the troll's nostrils.

JonJonB> He bent down and pulled his wang out of the troll's nose. It was covered in what looked like lumpy gray glue.

JonJonB> He ran onto the field as you fell, waved his wang, and you sort of slowed down before you hit the ground. Then he whirled his wang at the dementors. Shot silver stuff at them.

JonJonB> Ok
JonJonB> I have found, definitive proof
JonJonB> that J.K Rowling is a dirty DIRTY woman, making a fool of us all
JonJonB> "Yes," Harry said, gripping his wang very tightly, and moving into the middle of the deserted classroom. He tried to keep his mind on flying, but something else kept intruding.... Any second now, he might hear his mother again... but he shouldn't think that, or he would hear her again, and he didn't want to... or did he?
melusine > O_______O
JonJonB> Something silver-white, something enormous, erupted from the end of his wang

JonJonJonB> Then, with a sigh, he raised his wang and prodded the silvery substance with its tip.

JonJonJonB> 'Get - off - me!' Harry gasped. For a few seconds they struggled, Harry pulling at his uncles sausage-like fingers with his left hand, his right maintaining a firm grip on his raised wang.

Harry's just so gay.

LOL.

WOW this places me in..:74422 of 1544018 position..top 5% of the population hahaha!

Poetic'O

The blind boy longed to see colours. I say to him;
Look at the vastness of the dark sky, as the starry bodies shine in full glory.
Listen! The birds of the deep blue sky singing in anticipation!
The freshness of the trees and the air, green is its colour.
You can see the blue of the ocean as the sound of waves beating against whitewashed rocks!
The smell of the ocean that uplifts the very soul.
The blind boy cannot see, but the assuring warmth of the sun looks radiantly red.
Alas, he saw! But alas, he said, "I am but I am."

Man cannot comprehend.
Man cannot apprehend.
He is minuscule, insignificant.
The greatness of nature, simply overwhelming.
The wonders of creation, perplexing yet simple.

A little spinoff yesterday's post. Yepz.
Just feeling blue haha.
